Like every brand, Puma has it’s pros and cons. For some consumers, Puma is their favorite sportswear brand, while others prefer other brands like Nike, New Balance or Adidas.

Knowing if Puma is the right brand for you comes down to preference. Here are the pros and cons of the Puma brand.

Pros of Puma

Style

Puma is known for having simple and stylish clothing. If you like the look of classic sportswear clothing, then you can’t go wrong with Puma.

Puma isn’t the type of brand that is going to push the envelope when it comes to their clothing and shoe designs. Many people like this because it makes Puma a timeless and classic brand.

If you’re looking for some stylish clothing that you can wear to the gym, out while running errands or casually, Puma has some great choice.

Comfort

Whether if it’s the shoes, sweatpants, sweaters or shirts, Puma is known for having comfortable clothing. If you’re looking to add some comfortable apparel to your wardrobe, then you can’t go wrong with Puma.

Puma shoes are so comfortable due to their cushioning, flexibility and breathability. Many consumers love Puma because their clothing and shoes are extremely comfortable.

In my experience, Puma clothing has always been comfortable and well-suited for sports and physical activity. As a consumer, it’s hard to find sportswear items that are more comfortable than what Puma has to offer.

Accessibility

One of the reasons why Puma has remained so popular is because of how accessible it is. Puma has over 830 stores worldwide and their clothing can be found in many other retail stores.

If you go to your local mall, chances are you will be able to find Puma apparel quite easily. This is a major reason why so many consumers like the Puma brand.

I have gotten multiple pairs of Puma sweatpants at Costco that I wear regularly. The style, fit and quality is good, which makes them a great value.

If you’re looking for some affordable athletic clothing, Puma is a great choice.

Brand History

One of the reasons why Puma is so popular among consumers, is because of it’s brand history. Since being founded 1948 by Rudolph Dassler, Puma has become a big name in the sportswear world.

Puma’s first design was a soccer cleat and it was an instant success. Over the years, Puma expanded into different sports.

By the 1960’s, Puma became known for it’s revolutionary shoe designs and they were the first company to use vulcanized rubber in the soles of their shoes. Puma also collaborated with high-profile athletes and olympians.

In the 1970’s, Puma was a popular shoe brand in the hip-hop world and was worn by the likes of the Furious Five and Grandmaster Flash. By the 1980’s, Puma began to face competition from brands like Nike and Adidas.

Now, Puma is an iconic brand that is associated with many big moments in sports history. When people see the iconic Puma logo, they automatically associate it with the sportswear brand.

Whether if it’s a pair of shoes, shirt or sweater, by putting on a product from Puma, you are putting on a piece of history.

Fun fact: Puma was founded by Rudolph Dassler. While Adidas was founded by his brother Adolf Dassler. Now, both Adidas and Puma are among the top sportswear brands in the whole world.

Cons of Puma

Here are the cons of the Puma brand:

Quality & Durability

When it comes to the Puma brand, it has the reputation of not being the most durable and shrinking in the wash. Since Puma is on the affordable side, their clothing is still a good value.

It’s just that consumers can’t expect the shoes and apparel from Puma to last for years at a time. If worn regularly, a pair of Puma shoes should last for around a year, to a year and a half.

In my experience, the clothing I have owned from Puma has stood the test of time. However, when it comes to the shoes I was slightly disappointed, since the soles wore out quite quickly.

Overall, I would get shoes and clothing from Puma if it was on sale or for the right price.

Lack of Innovation

Although, Puma is a staple in the sportswear world, they are becoming less and less popular due to their lack of innovation. The Puma hasn’t pushed the limits or tried anything different in years.

This has resulted in consumers switching to other brands. Even though, Puma is a well known brand, it doesn’t change the fact that their clothing and shoes have a basic look.

If you like the classic look of Puma clothing and sneakers, then this won’t be an issue. However, if you want something that is different and stands out, Puma just isn’t the brand for you.

Alternative Options

As a consumer, when I go shopping for a new pair of sneakers, naturally Puma isn’t my first choice.

Right now, one of the biggest issues that the Puma brand faces, is external competition. The sportswear and athletic footwear industries are super saturated, which makes it hard for Puma to remain relevant and cool among consumers.

It’s no secret that every brand has it’s up and downs. However, Puma just isn’t as popular as it once was. Brands like New Balance, Nike and Adidas have continually taken market share from Puma.
