As a man in my early twenties, I’ve seen plenty of trends come and go. I remember the days when basketball shorts going down to your shins was in style.
Nowadays, it seems as if men’s shorts are getting shorter and shorter, but why?
Men’s shorts are getting shorter because they’re a newer style being worn recently by celebrities and influencers. However, the trend is catching on with average guys because these shorts are comfortable and look good. This summer, we’ll be seeing stores showcase these shorter styles and men of different ages will be wearing them.
In this post, I discuss the new style of short shorts, comfort, influencer trends. I also share the different styles of shorts and where you can find them.
Men’s shorts are getting shorter: Here’s why.
New Style
In the last year, short shorts for guys have made a comeback and have been seen on athletes, celebrities, tiktokers and YouTubers. In contrast to a couple of years ago when shorts came to the knee and longer, the new style of shorts go from mid thigh to a couple of inches above the knee.
When I first saw the shorter style, I thought they looked really odd. However, since I saw them everywhere, they grew on me and I finally got some. I have to admit, I now think they look really good.
Short shorts paired with a slightly oversized shirt makes for a really nice outfit for the summer. These shorts have now become a staple in a guy’s wardrobe. If you don’t have any yet, it’s a good idea to get some to update your look.
The Look and Fit
Shorter shorts actually look good. They make your legs look longer, and depending on the fit, could make them look more muscular as well.
Whether you’re a bigger guy, or skinny like me, they can still work. Since I’m thin, having shorts that fit a bit tighter and are shorter makes my legs look better.
Personally, I like a short or bathing suit that fits anywhere from 2-5 inches above the knee. You may like something shorter, and that’s perfectly fine. It’s a good idea to try on a few pairs to see what looks best and makes you feel confident.
Comfort
Short shorts are simply way more comfortable than traditional basketball shorts or dress shorts. I genuinely can’t imagine going back to longer shorts. Wearing shorter shorts are about as close as you can get to the feeling of walking around in underwear, but way more appropriate.
One of my biggest requirements when shopping for new clothing is comfort. If you’re like me, you’ll also prefer your shorts fitting a few inches above the knee.
Whether you’re going to play a sport, wear them to bed, around the house or to school, short shorts are a great comfortable option to have in your wardrobe.
Influencer Trends:
Often times, what we wear is heavily influenced by what our favorite celebrities, YouTubers, athletes and Tiktokers are wearing. On Tiktok is has become very popular for men to wear shorter shorts.
The effect that influencers have had on this style is clear.
Everyone can wear shorter shorts, no matter how you look. Athletes like Odell Beckham Jr., celebrities like Justin Bieber and others have been photographed wearing shorter short styles.
Different Styles and Where You Can Get Them:
Sweat Shorts
Sweat Shorts are becoming extremely popular as they’re so easy to wear. They look and feel like sweatpants with a drawstring, but in the form of shorts. These are my favorite type of shorts as they are so comfortable.
I recommend checking out the sweat shorts from H&M – they’re comfortable, stylish and affordable.
Athletic/Gym Shorts
When it comes to working out or playing sports there’s no question that a shorter fitting short is the best option. Short shorts allow for more mobility and they are way more comfortable when you are running and sweating. Short shorts will give you the most freeing feeling when doing physical activity.
I suggest Gym Shark sport shorts as they are a great quality and meant for working out.
Dress Shorts
When you want to look a little less casual, go for a short dress or short Bermuda style short. For dress shorts, a good look is when they fit right above the knee. If the shorts are too short, they might be too casual and won’t serve their purpose.
I think you’ll find that nicer shorts that fit just above the knee, are much more comfortable than a longer fitting short.

Final Thoughts
There’s no question that short shorts a really nice and practical style. Wearing shorts that are shorter is not only more comfortable, but also makes your legs look better.
Since we’ve seen celebrities and influencers embrace the trend, and now we’re seeing this shorter look appear in retail stores, short shorts will be with us for a while.
