History of Lacoste – An Iconic Brand
Lacoste is a renowned French clothing and lifestyle brand founded in 1933 by tennis player René Lacoste and André Gillier. The Lacoste brand is recognized for its iconic polo shirts featuring the distinctive green crocodile logo.
Here is the history of Lacoste:
Where Lacoste Originated From:
René Lacoste, a talented tennis player, felt the need for more comfortable and practical clothing to wear on the tennis court. He designed a short-sleeved shirt made from breathable fabric, which allowed for better movement and performance.
This shirt would later become the prototype for the world-famous Lacoste polo shirt.
The Crocodile Logo:
The Lacoste green crocodile logo has a unique story behind it. René Lacoste earned the nickname “The Crocodile” during his tennis career because of his tenacity and fighting spirit on the court.
He decided to use a crocodile logo on his shirts, making Lacoste one of the first fashion brands to display a visible logo on clothing.
The Popularity of the Polo Shirt:
Initially, Lacoste produced polo shirts solely for René Lacoste and his close friends. However, the design gained popularity among other tennis players and sports enthusiasts.
As demand grew, René Lacoste partnered with André Gillier, a textile manufacturer, to establish the “Chemise Lacoste” company in 1933.
Lacoste’s Expansion into International Markets:
Lacoste quickly expanded its reach beyond France, making its mark on the international stage. The brand gained popularity in the United States during the 1950s and became a staple of the preppy style.

Ownership Change:
In 1963, René Lacoste handed over the company’s management to his son, Bernard Lacoste. The Lacoste family maintained control until the late 1980s when they sold their majority stake to the Swiss company, Maus Frères. Today, Maus Frères is the parent company of Lacoste.
