Are you wondering what the dress code is in college? Well you’re in the right place.
As somebody who recently graduated from college, I know first hand what the dress code is in college and what dress code rules college students have to be aware of.
Which raises the question…
Do Colleges Have Dress Codes?
Technically, most colleges have dress codes, which can be found in the student handbook. However, the dress code for college is fairly informal, and rarely becomes an issue. Casual attire like jeans and a t-shirt or athleisure is appropriate for most colleges and universities.
What Is The Dress Code in College?
Most colleges and universities do not have dress codes. However, there is an expectation that students will attend class wearing casual clothing. Offensive t-shirts and overreacting clothing are typically prohibited in the college classroom.

What To Wear in a College Classroom?
In college, the best outfits to wear on campus include comfortable elements like sneakers, athleisure wear, and a sweater or jacket. Wearing warm and comfortable clothing is a good idea since you will walk across campus from one class to another, and the college classroom can get chilly.
Most colleges have a very lenient dress code, meaning you can show your personality through your outfits. In college, students often wear t-shirts, hoodies, sweaters, and jackets that display their interests (sports teams, bands, funny sayings, etc.).
Dressing how you want to be perceived in college is essential. If you wear professional attire to class, your peers and teachers will take you more seriously.
Whereas if you wear baggy sweatpants and a hoodie daily in a classroom setting, you may not be perceived as the most motivated student. This is something to remember when you are putting together your college outfits.
What Not To Wear in the College Classroom
Although colleges don’t have strict dress codes, certain clothing items are still not permitted. Pajamas, very short skirts, swimsuits, and slippers should never be worn in the college classroom.
Since most colleges have a casual dress code, it’s important to dress casually and not in sleepwear or swimwear. Additionally, attending class in an inappropriate outfit will reflect poorly on you.
Since the First Amendment is in force at state universities, the school can’t legally ban your clothing. However, if your shirt offends other students, you may face ridicule and harassment on campus.
Although it may be allowed, college students should avoid wearing t-shirts with offensive and political messaging. Wearing a controversial shirt can lead to an altercation, which you should try to avoid in the college classroom.
5 College Dress Code Rules:
Here are the 5 college dress code rules that all students should be aware of:
1. Casual Attire
For the most part, college students are encouraged to wear casual attire. A pair of jeans, a T-shirt, sweatshirts, and sneakers are considered proper casual attire.
2. Avoid Athletic Wear in the Classroom
Although it’s not an official dress code rule, avoiding athletic wear in the classroom is a good idea. It’s best to wear tank tops, gym shorts, and running shoes in the gym, as you will look underdressed in the college classroom.
3. Wear Modest Clothing
One of the general guidelines for the dress code in college is for students to avoid wearing excessively revealing or inappropriate clothing in an academic environment.
4. Consider Other People’s Cultural and Religious Beliefs
Colleges respect students’ cultural and religious practices, allowing for religious attire or head coverings that are important to some student’s beliefs.
5. Professional Oriented Dress Code
Certain colleges require students in specific programs like business or law to dress professionally for special occasions and particular classes.
Business casual wear including dress pants, collared shirts, blouses, skirts, and closed-toe shoes work well.

As someone who has spent their entire life in a Mass college town, I can personally vouch for the fact that your advice and observations about what students are wearing is spot on.
New students – more diverse and futuristic than ever – have begun arriving here for fall semester this week, and what has been a very dull and uninspiring place all summer has finally sprung back to life! ππ
I knew a new class had arrived when I was stopped at a red light yesterday and two conspiring Gen Z’ers on a bench across the street pointed upward and randomly yelled over at me: “hey look, there’s aliens up there!” I looked over at them and said “good, tell them to take me away!” Laughter was had by all lol – made my day.
From everything I have seen, Gen Z is the coolest, most badazz gen to ever rock this planet since the 1980’s – but way smarter and way better. The 20’s decade is the new 80’s – and Gen Z’ers are the legends that define it.
