Things to Consider When Choosing a Funeral Outfit

Choosing a funeral outfit is an essential and sensitive decision. It’s important to show respect and to be considerate towards the grieving family.

Here are some things to consider when you’re choosing a funeral outfit:

Wear Black Clothing as a Starting Point

Wearing black is a good rule of thumb when deciding what to wear for a funeral. However, it is not always necessary.

If you’re struggling to assemble an outfit for a funeral, sticking with a black outfit is a safe choice. You can enhance your outfit by accessorizing or wearing a colored tie and shoes.

Dress Modestly

You will want to wear traditional funeral attire, as it is a time to show respect and not make a fashion statement. Avoid attention-grabbing or flashy clothing and bright colors.

Attending the somber occasion in attire that is not appropriate can be seen as disrespectful by the family members.

Keep the Deceased Front of Mind

When choosing your outfit for a funeral, think about the person’s funeral you’re attending. For instance, conservative clothing is a good option if it’s a grandparent or older relative.

If it’s your partner or friend’s funeral, you may want to choose an outfit that they loved to see you wear or something that reflects their personality. Wearing something that your loved one liked to see you wear is a nice sign of respect and a kind gesture.

Think About Comfort

Funerals are emotionally and physically draining, so choose an outfit that suits the setting and weather conditions. It’s a good idea to avoid restrictive, itchy, or tight clothing.

If you will be standing at the memorial service, consider your footwear. Wearing uncomfortable dress shoes is not ideal and will only make the situation harder.

Wear Proper Footwear

When attending a traditional funeral service, you must wear the proper footwear. Generally, a pair of dark dress shoes is appropriate for the occasion.

However, a pair of leather tennis shoes or athletic shoes may be appropriate if you’re wearing casual attire. This depends on the specific dress code for the funeral.

If you’re unsure which shoes to wear, err on the side of caution and wear dress shoes. Make sure that your shoes are clean and in good condition!

Consider the Location

When you’re choosing your funeral outfit, you should start by looking at the funeral location. You should follow the traditional dress code if the funeral is at a funeral home.

Funerals can occur at alternative locations like restaurants, community centers, or country clubs. In this case, casual wear may be acceptable.

Consider wearing closed-toe shoes and a formal jacket if the funeral is during the Winter. If the funeral is taking place during the colder months, wear darker colors.

Funeral Etiquette and Cultural Sensitivity

Familiarize yourself with general funeral etiquette, including punctuality, offering condolences, and keeping a respectful demeanor. If you’ve never attended a funeral, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the etiquette beforehand.

Remember that if you’re attending a funeral with cultural or religious traditions, it may be different from other funerals you have experienced in the past. Being respectful and open to following any customs and specific guidelines is essential.

You can always ask another guest for guidance if you feel lost with the cultural traditions.

What Shouldn’t You Wear to a Funeral?

When you’re going to a funeral, you must show respect and sensitivity to the grieving family and occasion. Here are some things you should avoid wearing to ensure you have the proper funeral etiquette:

Avoid Logos and Graphics

It’s best to wear minimalist and simple clothing to a funeral. Avoid wearing tops with large logos, graphics, or slogans, as it can be inappropriate for the funeral.

A simple dress shirt is more appropriate funeral attire, and you won’t have to worry about being a distraction.

Don’t Over Accessorize

Avoid wearing distracting accessories like flashy jewelry and noisy jewelry. Wearing sunglasses, baseball caps and hats indoors is considered disrespectful.

Overall, it’s best to keep it simple when it comes to accessorizing for a funeral. A funeral is not the time to try and make a statement or draw attention to yourself.

Avoid Heavy Perfume and Cologne

Cologne Being Sprayed

While wearing a moderate perfume or cologne is perfectly acceptable during a funeral, it’s important not to overdo it. Wearing too much of any fragrance can be distracting and bothersome to certain attendees who are sensitive or allergic to strong scents.

Pay Attention to Grooming and Hygiene

For a funeral, being well-groomed and maintaining good personal hygiene is essential. Be sure to have a clean haircut, style your hair, brush your teeth, wear deodorant, and care for your other basic hygienic needs.

Tip: This may seem obvious, but it’s often forgotten. Consider putting a few tissues in your pocket. If you need one, you’ll appreciate it.

Do I Wear Black to a Funeral?

Generally, funeral etiquette suggests women and men wear black clothing that is conservative and respectful. At a funeral, black or dark colors are most common. However, certain cultures expect mourners to wear less traditional funeral colors.

  1. I’m not sure if this is something you would want to publish, but since we’re kind of on the subject here, I wanted to say that the handful of Gen Z’ers I am blessed to have as friends in my life introduced me to the most beautiful, uplifting concept a few years ago when I was dealing with the loss of someone close to me.

It was kind of a difficult concept for me to accept at first, but the more they helped and encouraged me, the more I began to embrace the wisdom of their way of thinking. It was this whole idea of celebrating the concept of life and that person’s memory more than mourning their passing…remembering that person with smiles instead of sadness and with laughter instead of tears…celebrating the fact that they lived a full, giving life and cherishing all the fond memories I had of them.

It was just one more way that those of you in Gen Z have helped me in life. So many of you guys are the most amazingly kind, non-judgmental, wise, funny, and down to earth badazz real people I have ever met on this planet – you really are – and I just hope that you all see those cool qualities in yourselves and are proud of who you are, because you absolutely should be!

One of the kindest things a Z’er ever said to me once when I was feeling down was telling me that I was like “an island of real in an ocean of plastic” these days….LOL…..well let me tell you, I feel the exact same way about all of you too – coolest, smartest, baddest, realest humans ever…true leaders, not followers…and don’t ever let anyone discourage you or make you feel otherwise about yourselves – you’ve all got way too much going for you to ever let that happen.
